The American Near East Refugee Agency (ANERA) was established in 1968 by a group of charities and emergency relief committees, with seed funding provided by the founding charitable organizations and a matching grant from Near East Emergency Donations, a consortium of U.S. corporations working in the Middle East. ANERA is based in East-Jerusalem. The grant has been extended to improve the care, education and development for Palestinian children, with the overall objective of addressing critical early childhood care, education and development needs of poor and vulnerable children aged 3 - 6 in the West Bank and Gaza.
