Established in Jerusalem in 1998, the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) seeks to promote the principles of democracy and good governance within various components of Palestinian society; it further seeks to engage local and international public opinion and official circles on the Palestinian cause. In the past year, MIFTAH has developed a project called "The empowerment of Palestinian Women in Rural Areas through Income-Generating Projects", which establishes five income-generating projects in five villages for 35 poor women. The project was very successful in providing the women with life-changing opportunities for income generation, productivity and independence in decision making at the family and community level. MIFTAH has been approached by a group of women to work and participate in such projects. With OFID's financial assistance MIFTAH expands this project to another 45 beneficiaries. The total project cost is US$300,000.
