The project aims at expanding potable water access to three-quarters of Nouakchott’s inhabitants by 2008, with the long-range goal of providing full coverage by 2030. Works will include constructing water intake facilities on the Senegal River at Aftout, some 200 km from Nouakchott and treatment plants, pumping stations and a reservoir. Water transmission pipes will also be installed An additional 10,000 rural residents living along the water supply transmission lines will benefit from the project. A readily-available, affordable supply of clean water will also help reduce urban poverty and incidence of waterborne disease.
