The 153 km-long Acoyapa–Costa Rican border road provides a vital trade link for the southern and southeastern parts of the country. Only 5.7 km are paved, however, while the rest is in poor condition. The project aims at improving the main roadway, totaling 146 km, from Acoyapa to San Carlos and on to the Costa Rican border by carrying out the following works:

  • paving and re-alignment of the road where necessary;
  • construciton or repair of bridges;
  • installation of drainage works;
  • implmentation fo a two-year maintenance plan;
Some 280,000 people residing in the project area, most of whom rely on the sale of cattle and agricultural produce for their livelihoods, will benefit from the improved corridor.
