The project will fully rehabilitate the 31.7 km long Accra–Tema rail line and refurbish railway cars, signaling and telecommunication equipment and railway stations. The re-commissioned railway system will reduce travel time significantly, as the bus journey from Accra to Tema during peak traffic hours can take up to two hours – a trip only 30 minutes long by rail. It is estimated that some 4.1 million passengers per year will use the train service, which will help reduce traffic congestion, accidents and pollution.
