The general objectives of the project are to reduce cooking fuel costs for poor households in El-Fasher, North Darfur State, and to reduce instances of indoor air pollution and related illnesses and hazards; through a micro-finance scheme that will enable poor households to obtain LPG sets, comprising an LPG stove and canister. Loan re-payment will be made possible through saving on biomass costs, therefore enabling the households to cover the initial stove cost within 12-15 months. The general objectives of the project achieved. More specifically, the project achieved the following: 1. The distribution of 12,433 LPG LPG packages (stove + canister + kisra plate) to households, directly benefitting 78,520 people. 2. The avoidance of 200,000 or 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide (4.65 tones per stove per year). 3. Creating a sustainable social enterprise, providing micro-finance for local energy access and carbon reduction initiatives, through the Women’s Development Association Network of North Darfur (WDAN), which established a revolving fund, operating as a social enterprise activity. The project fund has enabled 7,960 poor households to access finance that allowed them to purchase LPG cook-stove and canister sets.
