The southern city of Abidjan is facing an acute water shortage brought on by a burgeoning population growth. The problem is compounded by waves of north-south migrations as a result of civil conflict. Project works will be carried out primarily in the Yopougon District, the largest and most densely populated zone in the Abidjan metropolitan area, and will include the following:

  • installation of 12 boreholes with pumps;
  • construction of a water treatment plant with a handling capacity of 40,000 m3/day;
  • construction of 12 roads linking each borehole with the main access roads; and
  • installation of a two km-long extension of feeder pipes to the Abidjan network.
Upon completion, a reliable supply of safe drinking water will greatly improve the living conditions of the population, particularly in poor urban areas and informal settlements.
