OPEC FUND provided a grant to Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) to improve access to modern energy services by promoting the use of biogas systems in sub-Saharan Africa. This project is one of two projects undertaking by SNV in this area. The project improved the sanitation in schools and water resources in the area and at the same time produced biogas for cooking at the schools and agricultural fertilizer for sale. In general the project consists of the following 4 work packages which can be considered as 4 project phases: 1. Concerned the analysis, literature study and initial testing.The main activities that have been executed under work package include: Literature study on current sanitation techniques, Investigate the suitability of SimGas' GesiShamba' biodigester, and get subcontractors to design and construct the wetland among others. 2. Design and the development of the first 6 pilot bio-sanitation systems. The main activities include: assess the production methods, find scalable sanitation solution and make a decision on different production methods, product costs, investment, maintenance and durability. 3. Evaluated the existing installations done and suggests re-design and selection of the concept that is to be used for the next installations. 4. Scale up installations to 19 installations and gather relevant technical and business model feedback.
