OPEC FUND provided a grant to Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) to improve acess to modern energy services by promoting the use of biogas systems in sub-Saharan Africa. The project enhanced the production of milk and agricultural fertilizers through the use of biogas. It developed and implemented a milk chilling machine to reach small scale farmers with at least ten dairy cows with an affordable and durable milk chilling solution and deliver a proven technology ready for further up scaling. Two alternative technical solutions have been prototyped and implemented and the concept has been proven using field trials on prototypes, made with materials and parts that are available in East Africa. In addition, by-product solid waste - bio-slurry - used as fertilizer to increase farmer's crop yields.
