The OPEC Fund in Suriname

Engaging with local partners in this vibrant nation

"We tried to make the hospital more humane – more patient-friendly – with this rehabilitation."    Francis Amanth, Project Manager of the OPEC Fund co-financed AZP Hospital in Suriname

OPEC Fund Director-General Dr Abdulhamid Alkhalifa headed a high-level mission to Suriname in September.  In addition to signing two new loans totaling US$32 million to support sustainable development in the country’s health and energy sectors, Dr Alkhalifa and his delegation had ample opportunity to review the impact of ongoing and completed projects, engage with local stakeholders as well as beneficiaries, and gain some sense of the cultural and natural wonder that characterizes this vibrant nation.

Seeing the difference our assistance can make in people’s lives thanks to committed partners on the ground is extremely rewarding. This is the impact we hope to achieve.”   OPEC Fund Director-General Dr Abdulhamid Alkhalifa

The delegation visits the Menckendam Substation being upgraded under the OPEC Fund co-financed 'Expansion of Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Systems Project.'

The OPEC Fund is a true partner who was there to support Suriname during the worst days of the economic crisis. When our health project was in a difficult situation, we were able through  joint efforts to bring the project back on the right path. We are very proud that as a result the project is currently being implemented according to schedule.”   Minister of Finance, Gillmore Hoefdraad
