Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Interventions for Cholera Prevention and Control in Chad and Cameroon

This grant has been extended with the aim to improve access to safe drinking water and hygine and sanitation practices to reduce cholera and other diarrhoeal diseases in Chad and Cameroon. After implementation started, and due to the conflict in Northern Cameroon and resulting insecurity caused by the Boko Haram group; the funds designated for Cameroon were used to expand the project area and reach additional beneficiaries in Chad. Key achievements during duration of the project: - Training of nearly 100 health facility staff and community agents in WASH prevention techniques and measures; - Improving of water, sanitation and hygiene services and management in 13 health care facilities; - Applying evidence-based behavior change techniques to improve WASH in health care facilities and water treatment and hand hygiene practices in over 1,000 households; - Convening national leaders, policy-makers and practitioners to improve WASH as a means to improve health and prevent cholera; - Catalyzing regional training and adoption of WASH FIT Tool. Overall, the project benefited tens of thousands of people in the targeted communities to have improved WASH and enhance protection against cholera and other water-borne diseases.
