The project will build a modern airport that is designed to handle larger capacity Boeing 737s and more strategically located on the outskirts of town. Works will include:

  • construction of a 3,300 m-long runway, taxiway and parking apron;
  • construction of new arrival and departure buildings and a control tower;
  • installation of drainage structures and water supply and sewerage systems;
  • installation of a new baggage-handling system; and
  • procurement of up-to-date meteorology and communications equipment.
On completion, the airport will likely serve as a hub for neighboring Malawi and Zambia. In addition, as Mbeya province is an important food-producing region, the airport will create a new means for transporting and marketing agricultural products.
