This project was part of a broader program aimed at upgrading existing slums and informal settlements and at facilitating better access to affordable and adequate housing in Greater Monrovia, as well as improving the living conditions of vulnerable and low income communities. It specifically aimed to address these issues within the Slum Settlement of Peace Island. The project’s main activities included raising the main water tank towers; the construction of additional public latrine facilities; supporting a private community-based enterprise that was tasked with improving solid waste collection; conducting training workshops and targeted awareness campaigns; facilitating the establishment and operation of community-based WASH committees; and providing housing financing products. The two-year Project has a direct impact on the 13,000 inhabitants of the slum settlement of Peace Island. The project's main outputs include: 1. 3 water tanks connected to 3 boreholes run by a solar driven pump; 2. 3 water kiosks to serve approximately over 90% of the population; 3. 3 public sanitation facilities built, each with 12 cubicles (6 female and 6 male), and a bathroom facility with heated water with provisions made for the disabled, sick and children; 4. Solar lighting installed in those units for nighttime use; 5. Building local capacity for solid waste collection for the slum settlement through establishing 15 small CBEs providing waste collection services; 6. Under the hygiene training component, 20 community mobilizers were trained, and 450 households were trained on hygiene practices.
