Renewable Energies and Household Energy Efficiency in Rural Afghanistan and Tajikistan

The main objective of this project was to enable utilizing renewable energies which can provide constant access to electricity to vulnerable rural communities and entrepreneurs in targeted regions of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, leading to improved productivity, health, access to information and relief of household budgets. The project supported the utilization of renewable energy resources at individual and community level, especially the use of hydropower and solar energy applications such as Micro and Pico Hydropower Plants and small and communal photovoltaic systems. Local small and medium entrepreneurs who are able to financially contribute to renewable energy systems will be able to utilize the generated energy for productive purposes. The project was successfully implemented, and most of the planned outcomes have been achieved: Tajikistan: 1. Persons with new access to electricity 24/7: target was 1,000, achieved 1,667. 2. Businesses with access to electricity 24/7 and min. +20% turnover: target was 10, achieved 22. 3. Reduction of electricity expenses compared with generator use: target was -80% , achieved - 90. 4. Social infrastructure with new access to electricity 24/7: target was 5, achieved 15. Afghanistan 1. Persons with new access to electricity 24/7: target was 3,000, achieved 14,014. 2.
