The Djizzak and Sirdarya regions in the southeast are populated by around 1.7 million people, of which 1.2 million rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. Some 432,000 ha in the area are cultivated using irrigated agriculture but inadequate maintenance has reduced the efficiency of the irrigation network,resulting in saline conditions that reduce soil fertility. Agricultural production has thus declined by almost one-third. The project will carry out the following:

  • construction of a pumping station and intake canal in Djizzak;
  • rebuilding of a 68.3 km-long drainage collector;
  • reconstruction of canals and drainage structures in Sirdarya;
  • provision of farmers with inputs and technical training;
  • provision of training to farmers’ organizations; and
  • extension of institutional support to Water User Associations.
