Pakistan’s road network is fairly extensive, comprising around 250,000 km of roads, of which 24,000 km are paved. The combination of heavy vehicle loads and inadequate maintenance, however, has deteriorated many sections, particularly in the country’s second largest province, Sindh. The project will therefore carry out the following:
- paving a 31 km section of the Thatta-Sujawal highway; and a 133 km portion of the Nawabshah-Kotlalu-Ranipur;
- upgrading of around 1,200 km of high-priority, rural access roads to all-weather standard; and
- establishment of a community-based pilot project to train the local population in road construction and maintenance.
