The Northeast Ghor Canal Irrigation Project covers an area of 7,700 ha in the northern part of the Jordan Valley. It is essentially an irrigation and rural development project which involves the construction of two diversion weirs and siltation reservoirs, 55 km of pipelines and a distribution network for sprinkler irrigation of 2,760 ha, 30 km of farm roads, and rehabilitation works on the existing East Ghor Canal. A population of 25,000 persons will benefit from this project. Minor works include domestic water supply for 10 villages, 3 new health centers, some 159 classrooms and a vocational training center which will benefit the population in the project area. Upon project completion, agricultural production is expected to double. and the standard of living of the population would be raised. The economic rate of return is 24% and the production of high value fruits and vegetable is expected to annually earn US$6.0 million in foreign exchange.
