Situated northeast of Abidjan is an area referred to as “Bengerville,” where drinking water is drawn from groundwater piped in through an aging borehole that produces just 3,500 m3/day, falling seriously short of the estimated daily need of 5,600 m3. The project will therefore include the following works: drilling of five boreholes fitted out with pumping equipment to boost the daily capacity to 22,000 m3; construction of a water purification plant; installation of a pipe network that will link to the new boreholes; expansion of the water supply network by 54 km in the western enclaves of Bengerville; and installation of 1,000 new household connections. Approximately 80% of the water produced by the new system will be directed to recipients who are currently unconnected to any source of potable water, thereby raising living standards and improving the health of the beneficiary population.
