The first phase of this project will excavate a 27-km tunnel, through which water from the Melamchi River will be channeled to Kathmandu Valley. This supply, along with water from the region’s smaller tributaries, will be processed at a new treatment plant. Other works will include:

  • construction of a new distribution system and rehabilitation of existing ones
  • upgrading of four sewage treatment plants
  • construction of new sewers
  • installation of public sanitary facilities
  • construction of a 25 km-long access road
  • upgrading of a 29 km-long main road
The project is expected to provide 180,000 families with improved water supply and sanitation facilities.
