Although Mali possesses ample water sources for irrigation, inadequate infrastructure and the high cost of harnessing these resources limit their potential. The project area is the Ké- Macina region, a key rice-growing area located northeast of the capital Bamako. Successes of an earlier project will be expanded by

  • rehabilitation of an additional 3,160 ha;
  • enhancing social services for around 1,250 families in 10 villages;
  • upgrading and enlarging a main irrigation canal;
  • installing a 100 km drainage network; and
  • construction of social infrastructure.
Once completed, an annual increase of 12,000 tons of rice and 6,000 tons of vegetables is anticipated, thereby boosting food supplies and household incomes for some 16,000 people.
