This project covered phase II of an on-going program aimed to reduce maternal-child mortality in rural areas of the 12 districts of the Sofala province, through enhanced access to quality health services at the different rural health posts, increased outreach of existing health activities for mothers and children in the different communities concerned, and promotion of effective community participation strategies in decision-making processes related to community health. The project directly benefited over 265,000 women, 130,000 children under five, 90 traditional midwives and 60 community leaders, with indirect benefits to the concerned communities at large. The project was embedded in a larger programme that aims to improve the health situation in the districts Caia, Maringue, Marromeu and Muanza in the South of Sofala Province, Mozambique. During the implementation of this project, the following activities are accomplished: • 61 activists (APEs) trained with 994 model families; • 21 functioning water supply systems (12 new systems and 09 systems revitalized and maintained); • 21 houses for expecting mothers were constructed (10 new houses built and follow-up and maintenance of 11 houses); • 21 Energy systems installed (16 renewable energy systems and 05 electricity systems of the national system); • 14 Community leaders trained and capacity building measured replicated for 98 other community leaders; • 20 Water management committees trained (11 new committees and revitalization of 09 committees); • 1.104 Landfills constructed • 406 pens constructed; • 12 Health management committees with 235 members established; • 12 Co-management committees with 121 members established;
