Government is in the process of implementing a national strategy to rehabilitate the primary road network and has succeeded in paving most of the key stretches. The project will carry out the following:

  • paving of two remaining unpaved portions, totalling 50 km, of the Southern Highway between Golden Stream and the Guatemalan border;
  • construction of drainage systems and culverts;
  • repair of bridges; and installation of signalling and safety devices.
Some 30,000 local inhabitants will benefit from greater mobility and easier access to social services and employment opportunities.
