Around 80% of Tanzania’s population live is rural areas, where energy requirements are largely met by wood fuel, resulting in deforestation and land degradation. In line with Government’s aim to reduce poverty and provide reliable and affordable energy sources, the project will carry out electrification works in 15 rural towns and villages in the Geita district, an area with significant growth potential owing to its gold mining activities and cotton ginnery. An existing 220 kV line at The Bulyankulu Gold Mines will be extended with 55 km of new line and a substation built in Geita. During the first year of electrification, around 7,140 new customers will be connected. This will enhance economic activities in the area, and in turn raise employment opportunities and increase household incomes.
