The project will help provide the country with a reliable highway network to reduce bottlenecks in economic centers, where traffic congestion is at its highest, and ease travel to neighboring countries. Works will entail construction of a four-lane, 325 km highway that will link the northern city of Fez, populated by some 1.6 million, to Oujda in the northeast near the Algerian border. The corridor will be integrated into the Maghreb Highway, which connects the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott to Tobrouk in Libya, thus opening up cross-country trade opportunities. Once completed, the project is expected to benefit an estimated 1.5 million people in the eastern area, one of the country’s poorest regions.
