This programme aims to address the challenges imposed by the scale and protracted nature of the Syrian crisis in neighbouring countries hosting large number of refugees. OFID will support interventions in the two targeted countries, Jordan and Lebanon, as follows: Grey water treatment and reuse and water harvesting in the Northern governorates of Mafraq, Irbid, Jarash and Ajloun in Jordan, targeting the public facilities, such as schools, mosques, churches, municipalities and health centres; and Waste management in the municipality of Ghazzeh (7,000 Lebanese inhabitants, and 30,000 Syrian refugees) in West Bekaa in Lebanon, which is using an unsanitary open dumpsite to dispose municipal solid waste of the region. The project achieved the following outputs: A. Jordan component 1: Water harvesting stores at public facilities, were constructed within the targeted area. 2: Grey water harvesting stores were installed at public facilities within the targeted area for the sustainable re-use and conservation of water. B. Lebanon component 1: Detailed assessment and design for the closure of the Ghazzeh dumpsite was undertaken, including the completion of an Environmental Impact Assessment. 2: Dumpsite was rehabilitated and closed in an environmentally-sound manner. In both countries, the project implemented community awareness campaigns and training workshops for the relevant beneficiaries/ stakeholders.
