The Arab Gas Pipeline Project is a regional transportation and distribution network that aims to deliver surplus gas supplies from Syria, Egypt and Iraq to neighboring Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, and eventually to Europe. Syria’s role in the scheme is crucial, as it provides a natural corridor for connecting producing countries in the Middle East with consumer countries in the EU.
Under Phases I and II, around 550 km of pipeline was laid through Egypt and Jordan. Phase III will extend the network some 310 km across Syria to the Turkish border. The project is expected to improve the competitiveness of the region’s energy sector by promoting the use of cheaper and environmentally cleaner gas over high sulfur fuel oil.
