The grant helped the victims of the earthquake in Afghanistan, measuring 6.1. on the Richter Scale, which struck the northeastern Takhar Province on February 4, 1998, killing around 4,000 with thousands more injured or rendered homeless and causing widespread structural damage to villages in the severely affected Rustaq district. The OPEC Fund's contribution was used for the procurement of essential supplies for the victims of the earthquake.
