Our grant was extended to provide emergency relief for victims of the devastating earthquake that rocked densely populated northwestern Turkey on August 17, 1999. The earthquake which registered 7.4 and 7.8 on Ricther scale levelled buildings, caused severe damage to key roads and bridges and set fire to the country's biggest refinery. The earthquake's epicenter was located 104 km east of Istanbul in the industrial city of Izmit. Hardest hit, though, was the nearby port of Golcuk, and significant damage was also recorded in Istanbul itself, as well as in the cities of Yalova and Sakarya.
