The OPEC Fund's aid was to help the victims of severe flooding in Somalia. Torrential rains at the end of October 1997, brought disaster to many regions of the country as numerous rivers broke their banks, inundating towns and villages, and destroying crops on over 50,000 hectares of farmland. The rains have forced 220,000 people to abandon their homes. Grain stocks have been completely destroyed, and herds of livestock have perished, creating an urgent need for food supplies.
