OPEC FUND Provided a grant to the Group for Environment, Renewable Energy and Solidarity (GERES) to: - Reduce the socio-economic and environmental impacts of wood-fuels in Cambodia through the development of sustainable supply chains in the domestic energy sector. - Create favourable conditions for the emergence and strengthening of two local sectors in the production and distribution of sustainable energy solutions in Cambodia: improved cookstoves (ICS) and sustainable biomass fuels. The following activities implemented over the project period: - Built the capacity of two professional value chains engaged in the production and distribution of sustainable energy solutions for domestic cooking: Improved Cookstoves (ICS) and sustainable biomass fuels. - Put together a Strategic Development Plan (SDP) and budget for the ICS business association along with human and material resources. - Set up a pilot sustainable charcoal supply chain is and validates the viability of the model. - Engaged forest communities and traditional charcoal producers in sustainable practices. - Stimulated market demand for sustainable and socially responsible cooking fuels and devices by raising end-user’s awareness and supporting the promotion of the proposed solutions. - Finalized the draft "National Wood and Biomass-Energy Strategy" by the Cambodian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and accompanied by a national plan of action contributing to sustainable wood-energy management. Over the project period, GERES sought to ensure the sustainability of the ICS sector by providing support to the existing association of producers and distributors, and undertook to develop and implement a sustainable charcoal value chain.
