Although Bolivia is self-sufficient in energy and has enough installed generation capacity to meet the country’s electricity demands, half a million rural households remain unconnected to the national grid. Government thus attaches high priority to the expansion of the National Interconnection System to rural areas. This project will carry out electrification works in the departments of La Paz and Beni in the north central region, in particular the city of Trinidad and adjacent areas, and include the following:

  • construction of a 374 km-long 115 kV transmission line between Caranavi and Trinidad;
  • installation of three transmission substations and four distribution substations; and 150 km of feeder lines and connections for over 55,000 households.
The completed project will integrate a significant area of northeastern Bolivia into the national grid and aid poverty reduction efforts by significantly reducing energy costs.
