Since the inauguration of Bogotá’s highly efficient Bus Rapid Transit System (TransMilenio) in 2000, air quality in the city has improved, commuting time has dropped substantially and the incidence of automobile accidents has plummeted by more than three-quarters. Consisting of fleets of modern buses, the TransMilenio possesses numerous advantages: It uses transport corridors segregated from regular traffic, has special stops for fast boarding and uses an efficient, prepaid fare system.

This loan will help expand the present TransMilenio network by adding 32.3 km of bus lanes – including single, double and priority carriageways – and building terminal stations, bus stops and depots. Measures will be undertaken to reduce the environmental risk during the construction phase, and an 82 month-maintenance plan devised and implemented.
