Egypt's 1,200-km irrigation network is outdated and experiences significant losses, a situation that is particularly severe among small farming communities in the governate of Daqualiyyah, situated in the eastern Nile Delta and served by the Buhiyyah canal. Water shortages and the use of polluted drainage water has caused sharp drops in agricultural production. The project will thus carry out the following:

  • rehabilitation of 19.2 km of main and 168.4 km of secondary canals in Al Buhiyyah
  • construction of 28 wells
  • installation of pumping station
  • provision of on-farm water management training to extension workers so that they can pass this knowledge on to other farmers
Some 24,000 families (around 100,000 people) will benefit from the project
