This project will upgrade a road that runs through one of the most agriculturally productive zones in the country. At present only the first 21 km of the 91 km-long Thyolo–Makwasa–Bangula road is paved, with the remainder in poor condition. Works will include upgrading the road, installing drainage structures and roadside safety devices and constructing of bridges. The newly rehabilitated road will benefit both rural and urban populations by facilitating the local, intraregional and international exchange of goods, and providing easier access to social services.
