This project will be implemented in the towns of Bo, Kenema and Makeni, where less than 5% of the 496,000-strong population has access to safe water supplies owing to widespread damage and destruction to infrastructure from civil conflict. Works will entail:
- rehabilitation/reconstruction of water treatment plants;
- replacement of transmission and distribution networks in urban in peri-urban areas to increase water production from 6,000 m3 to 62,000 m3 per day by 2014;
- carrying out of sanitation works across schools, health centers, marketplaces and other public places;
- establishment of a revolving Social Connection Fund to enable low-income families to finance their new household connections, thus boosting the present number of 12,404 connections to around 249,000 by 2015.
