As Myanmar experience irregular rainfall the country is heavily reliant on irrigated agriculture. The project will therefore rehabilitate the Thonze and Kabaung irrigation schemes located in the Bago Division. Both are experiencing problems with poor drainage systems and are in need of repair and expansion.
Works will include the construction of extensive canal systems and the installation of secondary and tertiary drains. Once completed, the upgraded schemes will serve about 38,700 ha, effectively doubling agricultural output. The establishment of Water Users Groups is also planned. In all, around 80,000 people are expected to benefit from improved livelihoods and higher crop yields.
