Rural poverty is widespread in Burkina Faso, a situation that is particularly acute in the provinces of Bam, Lorum, Passore, Zandoma and Yatenga, home to more than 1.3 million people. The project will carry out poverty-reduction activities on 374 villages.
These will include a village-level organizational strengthening, the building rural roads, classrooms and health/social welfare centers, the creation of literacy programs, and the installation of wells. Crop yields will be improved through the development of watersheds, the construction of irrigation systems and small dams and the promotion of soil conservation methods. Small farmers will benefit from rural credit services that will be made available with the creation of five new savings banks and 100 micro-finance outlets.
