This project will rehabilitate and widen 151.3 km of road that transverses the Uva and Eastern provinces, high-poverty areas populated by nearly three million people. The improved stretch will help improve road safety and facilitate access to marketplaces, social services and job opportunities. On completion, the rehabilitated road will lead to lower transport costs of finished and semi-finished goods, thereby stimulating the manufacturing, mining, tourism and agriculture sectors as well as trade. The improved corridor will reduce the cost of marketing and transport, increase the financial returns to farmers and miners, improve the quality of the produce and encourage the production of high-value consumables.
