Lima is a densely populated city with scarce potable water resources and inadequate sanitation. Coverage is particularly lacking in the pueblos jóvenes, impoverished settlements on the outskirts of the Lima-Callao Metropolitan area. This loan will support the completion of a large-scale project started in 1995 to expand access to potable water and safe sanitation services in the pueblos jóvenes. This will entail: construction of secondary networks to connect an additional 46,000 households to the primary piped water and sewerage system; establishment of community-based water and sanitation committees; training of and local residents in water resource management and hygiene, as well as water and sewerage system design, construction and maintenance. OFID’s loan will directly finance sub-projects covering approximately 15,000 homes and benefiting around 90,000 people.
