The Pan-American Highway, a crucial North-South link, is in urgent need of repair. In addition to insufficient maintenance and the normal wear from heavy traffic and vehicle loads, Hurricane Mitch destroyed entire stretches of this road. The project will therefore carry out the following works:
- rehabilitation of six sections of the Northern Pan-American Highway, totaling nearly 260 km, and several portions of the southern stretch and paving with asphalt;
- rebuilding of the most severely damaged sections;
- repair or reconstruction of bridges;
- installation of drainage systems;
- replacement of signs and signals;
- introduction of monitoring system to improve road maintenance.
