This loan will support an ongoing project, which was also co-financed by OFID, to rehabilitate and add new sections to the Northern Highway, a route that connects the Beirut–Tripoli Highway to the Syrian border. Although progressing well, some parts of the highway require alterations to the design and construction method due to additional deterioration and changes in water table levels since the project was first proposed.
The project will construct a 10.2 km dual carriageway complete with drainage structures, lighting, road markings and signs. Three 18.7 m-long underpasses will also be built. Once completed, the heavy traffic that currently goes through the narrow streets of Tripoli to reach Beirut will instead be diverted to the newly upgraded road.
