The project aims to restore Korle Lagoon and correct the capital Accra’s drainage and flooding problems. Activities will include:

  • construction of new wastewater disposal system, sewage treatment plants and pumping stations;
  • clearing and dredging of the Korle Lagoon to remove silt and prevent flooding;
  • installation of a 1.5-km outlet pipe to enable the lagoon to empty into the sea more rapidly; and
  • rehabilitation of polluted shore areas.
Once the influx of untreated sewage has been stopped and drainage into the sea increases, the water quality of the lagoon will improve, and fish will be re-introduced. The project will help prevent the contamination of groundwater and eliminating a threat to public health.
