The Niger River is the country’s only major surface water source, flowing through the southwest of the country for some 550 km. The river’s mean annual flow is irregular and drops sharply during the months of May and June. Project works will therefore include:
- construction of a 1.6 billion m3-capacity dam in Kandadji, which is located some 187 km upstream from the capital Niamey;
- development of 1,700 ha of irrigated land downstream from the dam; and
- implementation of a resettlement scheme for some 3,600 individuals.
