The project represents Phase I of a plan to expand the inter-island transport system. Of the roughly 1,200 islands of the Republic of the Maldives, which extend 900 km from north to south, about 210 are inhabited. By providing regular, reliable and efficient cargo and transport facilities between the outer atoll islands and the main island of Male, the project will encourage the development of agricultural products in the outer islands for consumption in Male and the tourist islands. It will also release available vessels for fishing.
