Maniema Province is beset with chronic food shortages and high poverty levels. The project will help address these issues by targeting four production zones in the province; namely Kasongo, Kibombo-hinterland Kindu, Pangi and Kabambaré, home to some 960,000 subsistence farmers. Works will include:
- upgrading of around 1,000 km of rural feeder roads;
- rehabilitation and construction of market infrastructure;
- introduction of self-sustaining systems for the production and distribution of seeds, as well as improved breeding techniques to farmers engaged in livestock and fish-raising;
- capacity building and institution-strengtheningamong local organizations, NGOs and implementing partners;
- creation of a local development fund to help finance micro and small businesses;
- rehabilitation/construction of healthcare centers, water supply and sanitation facilities and schools; and
- implementation of an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
