The Roseires dam scheme consists of a main dam and two secondary embankment dams and a 280 MW hydropower station. Over the years siltation has reduced storage capacity. The project therefore aims at improving water management of the Blue Nile River, which feeds into the dam. This will be done by:
- raising the height of the main concrete dam by 11 to increase storage capacity from three billion m3 to 7.3 billion m3
- construction of an access bridge
- raising of embankments by 10 m
- rehabilitation of the power station to enable it to generate an additional 566 GWH of power
- relocation of about 7,400 families to new settlements fully provided with social infrastructure
