This project aims at enhancing Ethiopia’s socioeconomic growth by expanding the country’s national grid and providing electricity to some 70,000 rural households. Activities will include:
- upgrading and rehabilitation of sub-stations;
- upgrading of distribution systems in Addis Ababa and seven cities ;
- provision of electrical connections for about 50 rural towns/villages;
- installation of street lighting in villages;
- distribution of one million Compact Fluorescent lamps to customers in the villages electrified under the project, as well as those already connected to the grid;
- drilling of four experimental geothermal wells in the Aluto Langano geothermal field; and
- institutional capacity building.
