One important section of Pakistan’s railway network is the 1,440 km line running from Karachi to Lahore, two of the country’s largest commercial and population centers. Present traffic loads have overtaxed the existing infrastructure, necessitating reduced speeds and causing bottlenecks.
The project will expand one section of the link – the 121 km-long Lodhran–Khanewal line in the northeastern Punjab region. Some 14,000 tons of rails will be used to convert the single-track line to double-track to raise carrying capacity. Other works include expanding bridges along the network and improving level crossings. On completion, the revenue generated from the extra rail traffic will help stimulate Pakistan’s economic development.
