Burundi’s 12,000 km-long road network is vital for the movement of agricultural goods and people, but have deteriorated considerably owing to a lack of funding and damage caused by years of civil conflict. Such is the case in Bubanza Province in the northwest, one of the poorest areas in the country, where the predominately rural population depends on agriculture for subsistence and income-generation.
The project will thus pave the 26.3 km-long Bubanza–Ntamba stretch, and build bridges and install drainage facilities to insure year-round travel. On completion, the upgraded road will facilitate the transport of outputs and agricultural goods, and in turn, help reduce poverty in the area.
