The project provides for the construction of a 40 MW hydropower station to be fed from the Bowatenna reservoir in the Mahaweli Ganga Basin which was built for irrigation purposes and is now used for power generation. The output of this new station is expected to be in the order of 18 million kWh. The project includes the construction of an intake structure, power tunnel and anciliary structures, a power station and switchyard and installation of a turbine and generator with a 16 mile long transmission line to connect the power station with the main grid.
